Wild at Heart Art: Frequently Asked Questions

A few questions that often come up before placing an order. If you don't see what you're looking for, get in touch directly.

About Botanical Casting

  • Botanical casting is a way of taking something from the natural world, a flower, a leaf, a whole bouquet, and capturing its exact form in cast. The plant itself isn't preserved, but its shape, texture and detail are held permanently in plaster, concrete or terracotta.

  • I work in plaster, concrete and terracotta, earthen materials, each with its own character. Plaster captures the finest detail and has a pale, soft quality. Concrete is heavier and has a more contemporary feel. Terracotta brings warmth and an earthy tone. We can talk through which suits your piece best.

  • Most flowers, leaves and foliage can be cast, though some hold their shape and detail better than others. Sturdier flowers and leaves with clear structure tend to come through beautifully. If you're not sure whether something will work, send a photo and I'll let you know before you commit to anything.

  • Fresh flowers generally hold the most detail. Certain dried flowers can be used but they are sometimes just too fragile to withstand the casting process.

  • This depends on the material. Concrete pieces are generally robust enough for outdoor spaces, though bear in mind they will ‘weather’. Terracotta can also go outside but it will also ‘weather’ and the mix I use contains traces of iron so will the panel will rust over time. Personally, I keep my terracotta ones indoors. Plaster is also better suited to being kept indoors, avoiding areas of high humidity.

  • A soft, dry cloth is usually enough to keep a piece looking its best. Avoid harsh cleaning products, and if your piece has any colour or finish, keep it out of strong direct sunlight.

Wedding Bouquet Casting

  • Fresh flowers begin to change quickly, so the sooner the bouquet reaches me after the day, the better the result. Ideally, it should be with me within 3 days.

  • You can drop off your bouquet at my studio in Newcastle (by appointment) or send it through the post. I can give you guidance on how best to do this. If you need to delay sending for a day or two please keep the flowers hydrated and in a cool place.

  • This depends on the size of the panel and the amount of time it takes to cure. It can take up to 10 weeks.

  • Yes. If you'd like more than one piece cast, whether that's bridesmaids' bouquets or buttonholes, get in touch and we can talk through what's possible and put together a quote.

Memorial flower casting

  • Yes. A small amount of ashes can be worked into the casting material itself, so they become part of the piece rather than sitting separately within it.

  • Only a very small amount is needed.

  • That's entirely possible. Flowers from a funeral, a favourite plant from their garden, or anything that holds meaning can form the basis of a piece.

  • Yes. I know these pieces often carry a great deal, and I take care with each one, both in how it's made and in how we talk things through along the way.

  • This depends on the size of the panel and the amount of time it takes to cure. It can take up to 10 weeks.

Custom and General Commissions

  • Yes. Many custom pieces start this way, with flowers that mean something to you, from a garden, an occasion, or simply ones you love.

  • That's fine too. We can talk through what you're drawn to, and I can suggest flowers and foliage that would work well for the piece you have in mind.

  • Yes. Get in touch with a little about the occasion and what you're hoping for, and we can work out what might suit.

  • Within reason, yes.
