Three fiddleheads, caught in the moment before they become something else. There is something about a fern unfurling that feels like pure potential.
This tactile panel was cast directly from three real stems, pressed into plaster while they were still perfect. Every feature is preserved exactly as the plant made it. This fern has grown in my garden for more than twenty years, since before I moved here. It was one of the few plants I made sure to keep when I did a garden makeover.
Fun fact: In Victorian times ‘Pteridomania’ was a widespread craze for collecting and cultivating ferns.
Hang it somewhere with a right-angle light source to enhance the sculptural relief shadows and it will do different things at different hours.
Each piece is handmade and one of a kind. Because I work with real plants, you may find tiny traces of botanical material left in the plaster. I think of these as memories of the plant itself.
